1.Backstitch or back stitch and its variants stem stitch, outline stitch and split stitch are a class of embroidery and sewing stitches in which individual stitches are made backward to the general direction of sewing. These stitches form lines and are most often used to outline shapes or to add fine detail to an embroidered picture.
2. The running stitch or straight stitch is the basic stitch in hand-sewing and embroidery, on which all other forms of sewing are based. The stitch is worked by passing the needle in and out of the fabric. Running stitches may be of varying length, but typically more thread is visible on the top of the sewing than on the underside.[1]
Running stitches are used in hand-sewing and tailoring to sew basic seams, in hand patchwork to assemble pieces, and in quilting to hold the fabric layers and batting or wadding in place.[2] Loosely spaced rows of short running stitches are used to support padded satin stitch.
Running stitches are a component of many traditional embroidery styles, including kantha of India and Bangladesh, and Japanese sashiko quilting.[3]
Chain stitch is a sewing and embroidery technique in which a series of looped stitches form a chain-like pattern.[1] Chain stitch is an ancient craft - examples of surviving Chinese chain stitch embroidery worked in silk thread have been dated to the Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC).[2] Handmade chain stitch embroidery does not require that the needle pass through more than one layer of fabric. For this reason the stitch is an effective surface embellishment near seams on finished fabric. Because chain stitches can form flowing, curved lines, they are used in many surface embroidery styles that mimic "drawing" in thread.[3]
Chain stitches are also used in making tambour lace, needlelace, macramé and crochet.
Chain stitch is also a technique used to shorten rope or cable for storage or while in use; see Daisy chain (knot).
4.Having one loop on the needle, draw it out to the length of 3 ch, thread over the needle and draw through, making an ordinary chain stitch, drawn out to three times its normal length. Then put the needle under that one of the 3 threads of the long loop which seems to lie by itself, draw the thread through and make a single stitch. This is the knot stitch. This stitch is also called Solomon's Knot, Love Knot, Hail Stone and Lover's Knot. A lacey, airy crochet stitch. This stitch can be made as short or as long as one want, determined by the length of the center loop. In the past, a common use has been to make knot stitch for shawls but in contemporary crochet patterns, it's often combined with more solid stitches, for an interesting effect.
5.Buttonholes are basically slits cut through the fabric. The raw edges of a slit may be finished with fabric (bound buttonhole), or may be worked over with thread by machine or by hand (worked buttonhole)Buttonholes are usually horizontal or vertical; occasionally, to carry out a design, they may be diagonal.
6 .Satin stitch is also known as damask stitch. This again is ine of the oldest stitches evolved and is used for filling not too broad spaces. It is quite commonly used in different traditional embroidery forms of India, China and Japan. Working the stitch is quite simple. Neat long stitches are made very close to each other following the pattern margins. bring the thread up through the fabric and make a single straight stitch. Bring the needle out very close to the stitch just made and continue to fill the shape. Care should be taken not to use the stitch for broad areas as the stitch tends to loosen with time. Other versions of satin stitch like long and short are more suitable for the purpose.
7 .This stitch is practically painting with the needle. It is a filler stitch that fills the motif, flowers etc with the colored embroidery thread. It is a simple modification of satin stitch where the length of the stitches are at two levels. It is used when the space to be filled is too big to be covered with satin stitch. It is also used to give a shaded effect. In the first row the stitches are alternately long and short and follow the outline of the shape. The stitches in the following rows are worked in the same manner but to give a smooth appearance.
Phulkari, an embroidery technique from the Punjab in India, literally means flower working, which was one time used for word embroidery, but in course of time, word “Phulkari” became restricted to embroidered head cloth/odini. Simple and sparsely embroidered odini and shawls, made for everyday use, are called Phulkaris, whereas garments that cover the entire body are made for special and ceremonial occasions are known as Baghs (Garden).
Chikan is a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, India. Literally translated, the word means embroidery. Believed to have been introduced by Nur Jehan, Mughal emperor Jahangir's wife, it is one of Lucknow's most famous textile decoration styles.
Patterns and effects created depend on types of stitches used and the thickness of the threads used in embroidery. Some the varieties of the stitches used include back-stitch, chain stitch and hemstitch and result is an open work pattern, jali (lace) or shadow-work.
Traditionally, white threads were used on semi-transparent muslin cloth. However, with the advent of newer fabric types, and changing demands and fashions chikankari is now also been done on a variety of fabrics including synthetic ones. Chikankari is also available now in various colours. Sequin work is also done on the fabrics along with chikankari to give it the exquisite and glittering look.
A form of embroidery in Karnataka, it is called Kasuti there and means same as kashidakari or embroidery. It has also been desiphered as art of cotton thread and hands. The art was practiced by ladies of Maharashtra and Karnataka specially in Dharwad and Bijapur. The embroidery gives an exquisite effect to the soft furnishings
Manipur has only one style of embroidery which is exclusively its own with practically no variety of stitches. This embroidery is done on the border of the phanek, the woman's lungi. The embroidery is made in a dark matching shade with untwisted silk thread in red, plum or chocolate colour. It is so finely made and evenly chiselled that it looks like a part of the weave and is often taken as such. The elaborate and elegant design akoybi found in Manipuri embroidery has one circle joining the other each being further broken into patterns with a significant motif. The colours used in akoybi are two shades of red as though one were the reflection of the other, with a little black and just a touch of white. But in hijay, the all-over pattern is shown by a careful use of white and black to accentuate the running lines and the circular movements.
There is a very delicate applique of white on white, especially done on turbans. The abhala (mirror) embroidery is found on the ras dance costume.
In Saurashtra, the most ancient and noteworthy embroidery was done by the Kathi community. The women of this community showed preference for black cloth embroidered in crimson, violet, golden, yellow and white with greens and blues sparingly used to balance the colors. The main stitch was an elongated darn and chain-cum-interlacing.
Zardozi the imperial metal embroidery, adorned the costumes of the royalty, wall hanging, scabbards, walls of the regal tents and the rich trappings of elephants and horses. Intricate patterns in gold and silver, studded with pearls and precious stones enhanced the beauty of rich and glowing silk, velvet and brocade.
Applique or appliqué (from French, "applied") is an ancient needlework technique in which pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewn onto a foundation fabric to create designs.[1] It is particularly suitable for work which is to be seen from a distance, such as in banner-making.
In reverse applique, layers of fabric are stitched together and the upper layers are cutway so that lower layers form the design. Mola or San Blas is a reverse applique technique.[1][2]
A famous example of applique is the Hastings Embroidery whose designs are appliqued onto the backing fabric using a variety of embroidery stitches.
The Chamba rumal conjures up an image of a finely embroidered miniature painting. The tradition of Chamba rumal has been practiced in Chamba & neighboring states. In the mid eighteenth century when the art of painting was at its zenith, the women started embroider the figurative motifs. With the course of time this craft was developed in Chamba and flourished in the adjoining areas. These rumals are done on a squarish pieces of fine muslin cloth with vivid silk threads. Firstly, the painter used to device a design on a course loin cloth with black lines and then women used to do embroidery work according to his instructions. The stitch employed in the embroidery is called "Do-rukha" means Double satin stitch which comes out exactly identical on the both sides.
Ladies of the noble families in Chamba used to embroider the rumal during their pastime. They also used to give the embroidered pieces to their daughters as an important item of the dowry. Some times these rumals were also gifted to the deities in the temple.
Rasamandal was the famous subject of the Rumal however, hunting, Nayika Bhed, Shiva family and Mahabharata were other popular themes.
The tradition of Chamba Rumal is still alive in Chamba and a number of young girls are engaged in producing beautiful Rumals. Kamla Nayyar is such an accomplished embroider who has contributed a great role in the revival of the tradition of the Chamba Rumal. Masto Devi, Poonam and Lata are other gifted girls who are devoting their time for preserving this rich heritage.
The stark monotony of the desert landscape of Kutch is relieved by the bright shades of the embroidery created in the region. The embroidered fabrics that come from Banni in Kutch are embellished with mirrors and beads. The Jats are known for their refined embroidery skills. The specialty of the embroidery here is the execution of architectural designs known as the heer bharat. The stitch derives its name from the floss-silk (heer). The stitch, almost three inches long runs parallel to the warp in one part of the motif and to the weft in the other giving it a natural texture. In the center is a mirror secured with chain-stitch.
Moti bharat, Bead work - main thing is beads are instead interlaced together . Many of the embroidery motifs are used in this.
Moti Bharat is yet another embroidery famous in Gujrat. This is actually beed work.
